On Giuseppe Palumbo<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Those who know Giuseppe Palumbo only through his drawings\u2014from Ramarro<\/em> to Diabolik<\/em>\u2014might imagine him tall, thin, pale, taciturn\u2026 vaguely unsettling, somewhat like the exorcist from the film of the same name.<\/p>

In reality, Giuseppe is exactly the opposite, in every sense, able to balance the dark impact of his imagery with a bright and engaging personality.<\/p>

A man of culture (he holds a degree in Classical Literature with a specialization in archaeology), a great storyteller, and a lover of good food, he is excellent company to spend time with. And the same can be said of his comics.<\/p>

Giuseppe Palumbo was born in Matera on July 24, 1964, and soon established himself as one of the most authoritative Italian comic artists.<\/p>

The comics career<\/h3>

After attending a classical high school and graduating in Classical Literature, in 1984 he published Sul dorso di Atlante<\/em>, a comic book that earned him an invitation to \u201cZio Feininger,\u201d a postgraduate course in comics and graphic arts founded the previous year by the group behind the Valvoline Motorcomics<\/em> insert in the magazine alter alter<\/em>, including Igort<\/strong> (Igor Tuveri) and Daniele Brolli<\/strong>.<\/p>

In 1986, Palumbo approached the Milan-based publisher Primo Carnera and published in Tempi Supplementari<\/em> the color story Tosca la mosca<\/em> and the first adventure of the tragicomic \u201cfirst masochistic superhero,\u201d Ramarro<\/em>, later featured in Frigidaire<\/em>.<\/p>

Within a few years, he began collaborating with magazines such as Nuvola Bianca<\/em>, Dolce Vita<\/em>, Fuego<\/em>, and Mondo Mongo<\/em>, where comics interacted with other art forms. From 1990 he also taught at the Scuola del Fumetto in Milan and, the following year, co-founded the magazine Cyborg<\/em>, where he published series such as Miracoli<\/em> and Dream Master<\/em>, as well as new Ramarro<\/em> stories written by Brolli. At the same time, he worked for advertising agencies.<\/p>

From 1994 to 2000, Palumbo served as special advisor to Phoenix Enterprise<\/strong>, coordinating numerous projects and reviving Tosca la Mosca<\/em> in a successful erotic-comic miniseries.<\/p>

In 1994 he also began collaborating with Sergio Bonelli Editore<\/strong>, drawing Martin Myst\u00e8re<\/em> in several special issues and publishing the self-authored story L\u2019ora dei lupi<\/em> in Comic Art<\/em>.<\/p>

In 2002 he illustrated the large hardcover volume Il re del Terrore: il remake<\/em>, scripted by Alfredo Castelli<\/strong>, celebrating the 40th anniversary of Diabolik<\/em>. This marked the beginning of a long and fruitful collaboration with Astorina<\/strong>. His ability to blend macabre elements with irony and reinterpret tradition in a contemporary way was warmly received by readers.<\/p>

That same year, he also created Lupin III \u2013 Una Revolver per Jigen<\/em> for Kappa Edizioni<\/strong>, based on the character created by Monkey Punch<\/strong>.<\/p>

In 2003 he expanded his work internationally with the travel diary Atene Minore<\/em> and debuted in the French series D\u00e9dale<\/em> (Les Humano\u00efdes Associ\u00e9s<\/strong>) with Salom\u00e9<\/em>, written by Eric Prungnaud<\/strong>.<\/p>

From 2005, the publisher Comma 22<\/strong> dedicated an entire series to him, including Diario di un pazzo<\/em>, Cut Cataclisma<\/em>, EternArtemisia<\/em>, Alea Metron<\/em>, L\u2019elmo e la rivolta<\/em>, Una storia Lemming<\/em>, and Tutto quello che non avreste mai voluto leggere\u2026 sul fotoromanzo<\/em>.<\/p>

He continued publishing graphic novels such as Tomka, il gitano di Guernica<\/em> (2007) and Un sogno turco<\/em> (2008), written respectively by Massimo Carlotto<\/strong> and Giancarlo De Cataldo<\/strong>.<\/p>

His collaborations expanded further with works such as Sei tocchi di lame<\/em> (2012), Uno si distrae al bivio<\/em> (2013), I cruschi di Manz\u00f9<\/em> (2014), and La visione di Mallet<\/em> (2018).<\/p>

Between 2016 and 2017, the biography Escobar \u2013 El Patr\u00f3n<\/em> (written by Guido Piccoli<\/strong>) was published internationally, followed by the anthology Ramarro \u2013 Guerre fredde<\/em>.<\/p>

In 2017 he launched the Action30 Graphic Essays<\/strong> series with Bazar elettrico<\/em>, followed by Pasolini 1964<\/em> (2020).<\/p>

He also collaborated with Comics & Science (CNR)<\/strong>, creating Archimede Infinito 2.0<\/em> and subsequent works.<\/p>

In 2019 he created 16 possibili usi di un mausoleo<\/em> for the project Fumetti nei Musei<\/em>.<\/p>

For Bonelli, he illustrated Il Confine<\/em> (2020) and the \u201cTexone\u201d Sierrita Mountains<\/em> (2024).<\/p>

Between 2023 and 2024, he created La sola cura<\/em>, a graphic biography of Ludovico Nicola di Giura<\/strong>, and published new self-produced works.<\/p>

In 2025, he released Carlo Levi 1973<\/em>, Bosco dei Sogni<\/em>, and the anthology Lust<\/em>.<\/p>

His works have been translated into numerous languages worldwide.<\/p>

An illustrated perspective<\/h3>

As an illustrator, Palumbo created covers for the Mondadori Gialli Junior<\/strong> series and, since 2003, for novels by Stefano Benni<\/strong>. He has collaborated with major Italian newspapers such as l\u2019Unit\u00e0<\/em>, Il Manifesto<\/em>, and Il Sole 24 Ore<\/em>, as well as Slowfood Magazine<\/em>.<\/p>

In 2020 he illustrated books for Mondadori Oscar Ink<\/strong>, Eris Edizioni<\/strong>, Minerva<\/strong>, Pendragon<\/strong>, and Locus Publishing Taiwan<\/strong>. In 2021 he illustrated Caramelle dal cielo<\/em> for Gallucci Editore<\/strong>.<\/p>

Culture and teaching<\/h3>

Palumbo is art director of the studio Inventario aperto<\/strong>, co-founded with Barbara Ferri<\/strong>, and a founding member of the Action30<\/strong> collective.<\/p>

He has taught comics storytelling in Florence and Illustration at ISIA Urbino<\/strong> (2011\u20132024).<\/p>

He is also active in philological and experimental projects such as Le Ombre Suicide<\/em> and has created webcomics such as La Rosa e la Cenere<\/em>.<\/p>

Italian Awards<\/h3>

Palumbo has received numerous awards in Italy.<\/p>

In 2024 he was awarded the ANAFI \u2013 Emil Banca Prize<\/strong>, the Romics d\u2019Oro<\/strong>, and the Cygne d\u2019Or<\/strong>.<\/p>

In 2025, La sola cura<\/em> won the ANAFI Readers\u2019 Prize<\/strong> for Best Comic Book.<\/p>
